About the Artisan....
Judi Grant is a graduate of the Nova Scotia College of Art and Design in Halifax, Nova Scotia. She is a Halegonian by birth and a Cape Bretoner by choice. She settled here with her husband about 20 years ago, having bought and renovated an old school house on the south side of Big Baddeck Valley, now her home and studio.
Judy produces one of a kind
colour-coordinated wall hangings for home or office. Each one is hand
woven on a hand-lever controlled frame loom with a continuous
warp.
She also creates hand-thrown, unglazed pottery flower pots of native
Nova Scotia red clay.
Judi has combined her love of working in two tactile mediums - wool, a material that she enjoys creating with on her loom during our long winter months - and Nova Scotia red clay, a cool material that makes a pleasant change to form and shape into flower pots during our short, sunny summers
The woven product line consists of:
Judi's weavings do not resemble the
work of the more traditional weavers on Cape Breton Island, who work
mostly in heritage patterns making tartans, placemats, table runners
and blankets.
Judi's work has evolved into more of an art form than a craft. Each piece is unique. She creates her hangings like an artist paints, except she paints with wool. She draws her inspiration from the beautiful land in the heart of Cape Breton, bordered by the famous Bras d'Or Lakes and by the rolling hills behind her house. Her wall hangings reflect her appreciation of this natural scenery which she is fortunate to view through four distinct seasons. Given the powerful influence of the sea on everyday life in Cape Breton, Judi also designs a large portion of her work with the sea as her theme.
The pottery line consists of:
These are hand-thrown on a potter's wheel, as opposed to being slip cast in a plaster mould. Each piece is hand-decorated by Judi and fired once, with no glaze application - an environmentally-friendly flower pot which allows the soil to breath.
